tips to lengthen your laptop's battery life

  • Do not leave a charged battery dormant for long periods of time. Once charged, you should at least use the battery at least once every two to three weeks
  • For laptops that work as Desktop Replacement, the battery should be re-installed every 3-4 weeks and allowed to fully discharge.
  • Leaving a battery in a laptop while using an electrical outlet for long periods of time will keep the battery in a constant state of charging up and that will reduce the life cycle of the battery.
  • If you have a nickel-metal hydride battery, completely drain and recharge the battery once a month to maximize its capacity to hold a charge.

  • One way to save the life of your laptop battery is to use the laptop power cord instead of the battery. Many people have no clue that you can actually take out your laptop battery and just use the power cord to access your computer while your sitting at home near an outlet. By doing this, you're saving the battery from ever using one bit of power. Think of how much time you spend sitting on the couch at home with your laptop - plug it in!
  • Store batteries correctly: If a laptop is not going to be in use for a month or more it is recommended for the battery to be stored separately in a clean, dry and cool place. The battery itself should also be left with about 70% charge remaining, this is because during storage the battery will perform a slow self-discharge. The self-discharge also means that batteries should not be stored for longer than 3 months as it often has a detrimental effect on the battery
